For those not running Monkey this weekend

Saturday November 21

This Saturday, Nov. 21, some runners will meet at 6:00 at the Percy Warner main gates to run about 8 to 10 miles, probably on trails. This will be a fairly easy paced run.

The real running this Saturday will be by a gritty group preparing for the Rocket City Marathon. Some friends will do a 20 mile version of the Kroger-to-Kroger run. The plan is to meet at the Belle Meade Kroger (parking near the street as opposed to near the store) at 6:00 a.m., and then carpool to the Franklin Kroger. It's likely that there will be a run group and a run-with-walk-breaks group. Be prepared to carpool.

Sunday November 22
8:30 a.m. East Nasty training run: Scott Ramsden in charge. Bongo to Bongo, meet at Bongo Java in East Nashville.

Forum: Running Partners

Hello Striders,

How are you all (and y'all)?

I am posting this for a friend of mine here in Tucson. There is a new marathon in town that many of you running crazies will love. It would be a great training run for the Monkey I believe. If anyone is interested email Laszlo and get the scoop. Dean and I can host some runners at our house if you decide to come out and give it a try.

Mount Lemmon Marathon and 1/2 Marathon

Take care!
Bonnie

Forum: General Forum

"Donate It to the Program"

I have read and reread the TSSAA rules and regulations and no where do I read that high school runners can accept prize money or gifts and "donate it to the program". This phrase is fabricated as a way for the runners AND coaches to circumvent the rules and keep the prize money/gift certificates. It is plain and simple, it is against the rules and diminishes the integrity of the program. Why in the world would a coach, who should be an example to students, encourage the runners to cheat? Before you tell me to shut up and run faster, this particular incident has nothing to do with my winning the prize. It was the men's division and the high school runner kept the prize money. The coach jumped my case as if I were doing wrong in calling it out. He said TSSAA said they could donate a gift certificate of $250 to Ferguson Lighting to "the Program". The prize should have gone to the next male runner NOT to the high school boy.
This situation of "donating it to the Program" is becoming more prevalent. I also read the NCAA rules and regs last night and that phrase in NOT there either. I also run with a post-collegiate runner and her coach, who was honest, made certain the team did NOT accept any form of prizes, so I know the rule of no prize money/gifts still stands. It is amazing to me that coaches are encouraging their teams to cheat.
And again, before you jump down my throat, college runners have the advantage of coaching, free racing, training, scholarships, etc. while the rest of us juggle families, work, sometimes school, and other responsibilities.
"Donate it to the Program" is a term that allows cheating.

Forum: General Forum

The dreaded IT Band...

During this year's CM Marathon, I jacked up my IT Band. I had to take quite a few weeks off and did some exercises and things to strengthen it back up. I starting running again a couple of months or so ago and randomly it still hurts pretty. Anybody else with IT Band issues? Does the pain ever go away or do I just need to learn to deal with an occasional flare-up?

Forum: General Forum

Hi everyone, I was a Strider from '79-'96. Have lived in NJ since. For several years, I was out of the racing scene due to family responsibilities. Of course, my racing had more or less had its day already, but I did miss being in a running community. Lately, at age 57, I've gotten back into things somewhat, having discovered the Raritan Valley Road Runners in the middle of the state (well south of my town). They have "fun runs" on the Delaware/NJ canal towpath, a long trail lining the Raritan River and beyond. It actually runs for 60 miles, most people do 6-10 mile runs using and out and back. It reminds me somewhat of the old days on the 11.2 and "Run to Radnor" funruns.

Wondering if anyone of my old gang is still here. I bet Tomas is still going strong.

Jeff B.

Forum: Welcome

Groin pain

I have been relatively healthy since I began running 2 1/2 years ago with the exception of a shin splint problem a couple times. This morning during my 8 mile run, the inside of my leg where it joins the torso began hurting. All day today, it has hurt to walk and tonight it still hurts.
I have tried to warm up before running and not start out too fast. I don't think I have increased mileage too fast. (Have run 1800 miles so far this year, most weeks about 40 miles). I did run 8 miles yesterday a bit faster than a normal workout (7:34 pace).
Any advice??

Forum: Injuries and Prevention

I believe Pilot Knob's hill is the steepest hardest hill I have run in TN in a race. It was so steep I thought I was walking. At one point I think I may have fell backwards. I looked for the climbin ropes, but they didn't have any out. I am still having pain in my calves. Great race though. It is deceivingly tough.

Forum: General Forum

How bad will it be?

After an ultrarun in a heat wave nearly wrecked my health this summer, I gave up competition to concentrate on strength conditioning and regaining weight. For five months, until the Team Nashville 10-miler, where I ran a time of 1:11:30 using a HR of 147. I discovered I was in better shape than I thought. Now I find myself considering a marathon on Thanksgiving weekend - though poorly prepared by a weekly volume of 20-45 miles and with only two long runs, the second one this morning. My question is simple: How bad is it going be?

Forum: General Forum

Muir Beach Trail Run 50k race report

sruiz, awesome idea! Imitation, of course, is the highest form of flattery, so here is my weekend race report

I am in California's Bay Area for two meetings. I had a free morning and found this here 50k:

http://www.pctrailruns.com/Muir_Beach.htm

50k elevation profile

I am still too tired to write anything cogent or witty. I had a good time, despite nearly sitting down at mile 21 to wait for a helicopter to come and pick me up. The route is a 33k loop followed by a 17k loop. The 17k loop is nested within the 33k loop, so you hit many the major hills twice, with the tallest (not the worst) climb right at mile 26. The worst climb, of course, you hit twice, around mile 18 and mile 29.

We first hit the trail, winding through the hills. We had already climbed several hundred feet at this point. Up, down, up, down.

Turning around, looking back toward the start

Looking down on the ocean from the Coastal Trail

The Coastal Trail (on the second loop) winding through the hills and coves

A poor pic of a painful climb, straight up from Pirate's Cove

Looking back down from the stairs to Pirate's Cove

A bit later, this fence is maybe to keep me from falling?

They are serious about keeping me from falling

Eventually and with great effort you climb high enough that the protection from falling matters

Headed towards the Tennessee Valley aid station from the coast

Up from the aid station on the Marincello Road

Looking down down down onto Sausalito

Another shot down to the bay.

Looking back down the hill I just climbed

And then, finally up, it is back down towards Bonito Cove.
