Is it legal to have a beer mile on a local greenway or in a local park?  I know of a couple of non-track, off-road, paved quarter mile loops around here, and I'm thinking about organizing a beer mile.  But I wouldn't want to break any laws or be responsible for the idiots that ran it.

If this happens, it technically wouldn't be an "official" beer mile because it wouldn't be on a 400m track.  It might be long, or it might be short.  But the rest of the standard rules would apply.  The race would be free, and you'd get what you paid for.  BYOB.  I'd supply the bibs and probably bring a watch, paper, and pen to record the results.  I might even bring some food for hanging out afterwards.

My wife said, "I love beer, but that sounds like a horrible idea."  Bah.

From Metro's park policy guide (also posted on the signs outside of the parks):

SECTION 13.24.090 ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES:

A. It shall be unlawful for any person to possess or have under his control any beer, ale or other alcoholic beverages in any park or recreation area under the supervision or control of the Board, except under such circumstances, in such places and at such times as the Board may, by their rules and regulations, determine[.]

anybody have a big yard?  all we need a 1/4 mile loop, or even an 1/8 of a mile loop.

I love this rule (from the beer mile website):

Competitors who vomit before they finish the race must complete one penalty lap at the end of the race (immediately after the completion of their 4th lap). Note: Vomitting more than once during the race still requires only one penalty lap at the end.

I'm definitely in.

Can I drink all four and then run a mile?  Or run a mile and then drink all four.  Once I get started I dont want to stop...............Drinking that is, the running part I can stop anytime and usually do.

Music City Hashers (a drinking club with a running problem) have a beer run in Nashville every other Saturday at 2 PM all year long.

Love that song. I think the singer, Todd Snider, lives in east Nashville. Maybe the east Nasties could get him to sing it for the B-double E-double R-U-N, beerrun.

Both Davidson County and Williamson County think it's a horrible idea, and I'm too lazy to try to get permission from either county's park board.

But my wife is coming around to the idea!  She's upgraded it from horrible to just stupid.  And she's given me permission to have it at our house.   We have about 1.3 acres, so I can work out a 1/8 mile loop around the yard.  I might be able to work out a 1/4 mile loop with some zig-zags, but I'm afraid that would suck.  The yard's not flat either.  But I have an in-ground pool so we can swim afterward, and we'll grill out too.  That should give everyone time to detox a little before hitting the road.

I'm thinking of having this on Sunday, June 21 in the afternoon.  That's Father's Day, so I figure no one will have anything else planned that afternoon.  A good beer mile with a swim afterward will be an excellent way to shake off the Moon Pie from the day before and/or the Du Run Run from that morning.

I don't have as much parking or space as a city park, so the sign-up list will have to be fairly short.  It's cool to bring a guest, but at least one person per car has to participate in the beer mile.  I don't want the ratio of gawkers to runners to be too high.  Guests may be asked to record times, so I don't have to.

It's still BYOB: 12oz cans or bottles.  There will be bibs because I don't like races without them.

If you're (still) interested, please send me an email, and I'll put you on the official sign-up list and/or guest list.  I'll also email you back the important details like time, location, and course map (once I figure the course out).
