Wondering if anyone has any ideas. Two weeks ago today I was running getting ready for a duathlon that weekend. At 1 1/2 miles in my knee started to hurt, to the point I had to stop. I could not put any weight on it. Every step hurt. I was able to limp back to my car, by the time I got back to thwe car no pain, soreness, or stiffness. I stayed off the leg until Sunday. Did my duathlon with no problems at all. The following Tuesday I ran three slow miles. As soon as I stopped; same thing. I have cut way back on my miles. The last time I ran, this Monday, I did two miles with no problems. One problem is the knee will start to hurt at various times during the day. I can be walking and it will start to hurt, with no warning. I can be walking to the kitchen and it will act up. Same thing at work. (It's embarrassing.)Today, the knee felt great. Was going to test it out and had to stop after 1/2 a mile. The pain is located on the inner part of the knee, below the knee cap. At times when the pain comes the whole knee is sore. I have been icing it doing the NSAID things
I know this is a long, rambling post. To land the plane....any help??
Thanks |

Could be a lot of things. The area you describe is in the neighborhood of the medial meniscus. Any locking of the knee, or feeling like it can't fully extend momentarily? Any pain when you press in that area? __________________ “Success isn't how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started." |

Reply with quote | #3 | There is no pain to the touch. When it is hurting it is difficult to fully straighten the knee, but it does not seem to lock.
Thank you for your reply |

difficulty fully extending the knee coupled with region of pain complaint and the off and on symptoms lead to believe there is some medial meniscus involvement. If it persists you will need to see a doc. If it's torn, you will be faced with possible arthroscopic surgery to cut the tear out. All good news to you, I'm sure. Visit your favorite ortho/sports doc. If you don't have one, i andmany others on this board recomend Dr James Johnson at Nashville Orthopedic. He is nota surgeon so he's not looking to cut on you, buthe is a board certified sports medicine specialist and works closely with the US Olympic swim team...so he knows his stuff. __________________ “Success isn't how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started." |

Muscle problems can give the sensation of knee problem. I would suggest you find a good Sports Massage therapist and see if there are trigger points in the quads or sortoeus muscle. |

Go see the doctor now. If it is a medial tear, there is some evidence that a new tear can be repaired with good results. __________________ Pain dont hurt. |

Reply with quote | #9 | Nacel, starforce, Nick: I want to thank all of you for your replies. My shoes are okay. I use an Asics stability shoe and I am presently alternating 3 pairs, all with under 70 miles on them. I did see an excercise physiologist who told me that the problem sems to be extremely tight hamstrings. (I guess I am guilty of not stretching enough.) I have been more diligent with my stretching and that seems to be helping. have some minor residual discomfort, but I have been able to complete the miles, running and biking, that I have set out to do.
Again, thank you all for taking the time to reply and offer your expertise.
